Baby Mine

"Have you ever seen anything so adorable?" Lindsay asked Melanie quietly. She was standing in the kitchen doorway looking into the living room. Gus was sound asleep and curled up on Brian's chest. Brian had his arms around Gus and was also asleep. Lindsay smiled as she watched the two of them.

"Makes you think that Brian might actually care about somebody besides himself," Melanie said and Lindsay glared at her.

"Brian cares; he just doesn't know how to show it. I mean, come on, you've seen his family. You think he had very good examples of showing love?"

"You're always making excuses for him," Melanie said, then turned and went upstairs. Lindsay sighed. She continued to watch Brian and Gus for a minute, then decided to go up to bed. She figured with the way Brian was holding Gus there was no danger of the boy rolling off his father's chest and onto the floor.

About three in the morning Lindsay was awakened when she heard Gus crying. She started to get up to see what was wrong, but he soon quieted down. Lindsay then remembered that Brian was downstairs with Gus. She decided to double check that he didn't need any help. When she got to the top of the stairs, she could hear Brian singing and she smiled as she listened.

"Baby mine, don't you cry. Baby mine, dry your eyes. Rest your head close to my heart, never to part, baby of mine."

Brian had a nice baritone voice and Lindsay was surprised that she didn't know he could sing. She tried to place the song as she listened.

"Little one, when you play. Don't you mind, what they say. Let those eyes sparkle and shine, never a tear, baby of mine."

"What's going on?" Mel asked when she got up, Lindsay waved at her to keep quiet, luckily Brian hadn't heard anything and just kept singing to Gus.

"If they knew sweet little you, they'd end up loving you too. All of those people who scold you, what they'd give just for the right to hold you."

Melanie sat quietly beside Lindsay, a little dumbstruck.

"From your head down to your toes, you're not much, goodness knows, but you're so precious to me, sweet as can be, baby of mine."

It was at this moment that Brian realized that Gus was finally back to sleep. He smiled and lay back down on the couch, holding Gus to his chest. He spoke the last line of the song again. "You're so precious to me, sonny boy." He kissed the top of Gus' head, then closed his eyes and went back to sleep.

Melanie and Lindsay quietly made their way back to their bedroom and sat on the end of the bed, looking at the floor for a minute, then back to each other.

"Who'd ever have thought?" Melanie asked.

"I don't even know how Brian remembers that song?"

"What song was it?"

"It's from Dumbo. The mother elephant sings it to Dumbo after she's captured and put in that cage." They both sat in silence for a minute.

"You know, if we call him on this, he'll just deny it," Mel said.

Lindsay nodded. "Now do you understand why I defend him?" Lindsay asked, taking Mel's hand.

Melanie squeezed it gently and nodded. "He may keep it buried deep down inside, but Brian Kinney does have a heart after all. I suddenly don't feel so bad about letting him in Gus' life." She smiled at Lindsay and Lindsay smiled back. They went to bed and no one ever said a word to Brian.
