“Brian?”

“I’m right here, Baby.”

“Hurt.”

“I know. Let me get the nurse.”

“Don’t leave me.”

“I won’t. I’m just putting the call light on.”

“Brian.”

“What?

“I love you.”

“I love you, too.”

“Thirsty.”

“Here’s a few ice chips.”

“Brian, what time is it?”

“1:15 in the morning.”

“Am I ok?”

“Yeah, you’re fine now. You sure scared me, though.”

“Well, hello, Justin. You’re finally awake. My name is Kate and I’m your nurse for tonight. Do you need something?”

“I hurt and I feel sick.”

“I’ll bring you back something for both of those problems. I need to check your temperature first. Here, put this under your tongue. 100.9. I want you to take some deep breaths for me, and cough, like we did earlier.”

“Don’t ‘member.”

“I’m not surprised. You were pretty out of it. Ok, Justin, I’ll be right back.”

“Brian, what happened?”

“You passed out in your studio at school. Someone named Ken found you and called 911.”

“Ken. He does ph’tography.”

“That’s nice.”

“Why do I hurt?”

“Your appendix ruptured. You were in surgery for a couple of hours. The doctor said it was pretty bad. Why didn’t you tell me you didn’t feel well?”

“Thought it would go away. You were busy. Didn’t want to bother you. Or make you worry.”

“Justin, I’m never too busy for you. Next time talk to me.”

“Don’t think I want a next time.”

“Yeah.”

“Brian.”

“I’m here.”

“I love you.”

“Love you, too.”

“Ok, Justin, here’s your medication. I’m going to put it in your IV.  Have you had Demerol or Phenergan?”

“Demerol. Good stuff. They’re ok, not allergic.”

“You’ll feel better soon. Now I have an aspirin suppository for your fever.  I need for you to roll onto your side. Here, I’ll help.”

“Oh, no. Brian. Don’t let her put that in me. Brian, stop laughing.”

”Uh, Kate. He’s a little shy. How about you let me do that.”

“...Do it myself! Give it to me.”

“Ok, here you go. There’s KY on it already.”

“Don’t stand there and watch me, please. Briiiaaan, stop laughing.”

“Sorry, Baby.”

“Can’t you see I’m sick?”

“I’ll be back in about an hour. If he needs anything in the meantime, call me.”

“Thanks, Kate.”

“Brian?”

“Yeah?”

“What time is it?”

“2:55 in the morning. You slept for a while.”

“Why am I in the hospital?”

“Your appendix ruptured. You had surgery yesterday evening.”

“Oh, yeah.”

“Go to sleep, Justin.”

“Don’t leave me.”

“I won’t.”

“Love yo....”

“You, too, Justin.”

“Justin, I need to check your temperature again. 99.5. That’s good.”

“Brian?”

“What, Justin.”

“I forget.”

“What’s that noise?”

“Just the IV pump. Sorry it woke you.”

“I was dreaming.”

“Good dream, I hope.”

“Can’t ‘member.”

“Need anything else. How’s your pain?”

“Better. Where’s Brian. He said he wouldn’t leave me.”

“He’s just in the bathroom. He’ll be right back.”

“I love him.”

“I could tell. He loves you, too.”

“Yeah.”

“If you need anything, call.”

“Brian.”

“Brian.”

“What?”

“Are you mad at me?”

“No, Justin. What do you want.”

“More ice?”

“Here, not too much.”

“What time is it?”

“5:25.”

“At night?”

“No, Saturday morning.”

“What happened to Friday ? I was supposed to be in my studio.”

“You were. You passed out and EMS brought you here.”

“Oh, yeah.”

“Brian.”

“What, Baby?”

“I love you.”

“Love you, too. Get some more rest, please.”

“Ok.”

“Brian?”

“I can’t get comfortable. Help me turn.”

“Ok. How’s that?”

“Good. What time is it?”

“6:10 in the morning.”

“Justin, Hi, my name is Pat. I’m your nurse for today. Is there anything I can get you, right now? Do you need something for pain?

“I’m Ok. Maybe more chips. Can’t you put a little Mountain Dew in there?  They’d taste a whole lot better.”

“Maybe later. I need to see my other patient’s then I’ll be back to help you bathe.  Call me if you need me before then.”

“Brian.”

“I’m right here, Baby.”

“You look awful. I’m the one who’s sick here. You just sat there and rested all night.”

“I love you, Justin.”

“You too, Bri.”
