The Nature of Things

Chapter 48

Carl couldn't believe his eyes and wasn't willing to admit that he'd suspected Brian of the murders all along. The one thing that kept him from rushing right out and arresting Brian that minute was the thought that Kinney wouldn't be that careless. Brian was a smart man and he'd make sure there was no tape left behind if he'd truly committed the murder.

Carl tried his best to keep Cynthia's name out of the papers until next of kin had been notified. After looking through her file at Kinnetik, he'd found out that Brian was listed as her emergency contact and that put even more suspicion on him. Carl knew that he wouldn't be able to stop Brian from being brought in for questioning.

He placed a call to Justin, asking him if he'd heard from Brian and wasn't surprised to get voicemail. Justin hadn't left Maya's side since they'd found out about the transplant. He tried Kinney's cell and was shocked when Brian picked up.

"Brian, it's Carl. I need to talk to you. Privately."

"I'm busy at the moment."

"This can't wait. Meet me at your house in twenty minutes. Don't be late," he added before hanging up.

Brian hadn't been to the baths in years. He'd given up on anonymous sex after the explosion at Babylon. Even though Justin had left and moved on, Brian couldn't erase the memories. He'd tried to revert to old habits, but his heart wouldn't let him.

This was the first time he'd felt the need to relieve some stress and he'd found himself back on familiar ground. Only this time the faces were all different and he was no longer King Brian.

The young blond approached him as he entered the room and Brian led the way to the wall. He leaned back, waited for the familiar sound of his zipper. The youngster knew what he was doing and soon had Brian panting as he sucked and licked him to the point of no return.

Brian tried to ignore the damn ringing but reached into his jacket for his phone. He listened as Carl told him he needed to talk to him, told him he was busy and then hung up without agreeing to the meeting.

Closing his eyes he imagined Justin on his knees before him and quickly came. He felt the hand on his shoulder before he opened his eyes and pushed it away.

"Hey, return the favor."

"Find another poor sucker, I'm busy."

"Fuck you. You're just a hasbeen anyway."

Brian left without looking back.

Molly waited for the proof that their latest victim was gone. She'd had enough of Cynthia's whiny bullshit about the rape and something needed to be done to shut her up. Her list was getting longer by the day and included people she'd once thought she couldn't live without.

He'd been good at pointing the finger away from her, but things were getting a little out of hand with his problem. He was getting careless and Molly had to find a way to keep them from getting caught.

The killer smiled at her as she handed him the payment for a job well done. He unwrapped it, tasted and kissed her.

"It's all going so well, now is not the time to fuck it up."

"I pointed the finger right where you wanted it."

"Good boy."

Carl stood on the front porch smoking a cigarette. He'd quit ten years before, but tonight he needed one to calm his nerves before confronting Brian with the proof that could send him to jail.

Brian pulled into the drive, cut the lights and lit a cigarette before joining Carl on the porch.

"Your assistant was found beaten to death in your boardroom a few hours ago."

"So."

"Do you have an alibi?"

"I was getting my dick sucked."

"I'm guessing you didn't get his name."

"Do you know the name of everyone who's sucked you off in the baths?"

"You're the last person seen with her."

"She was alive when I left."

"You'll need to come to the station first thing in the morning and make a statement. Brian, I'd bring a lawyer if I were you."

"Guess I should call smelly Melly."

"This is serious, Kinney."

"You've met her; you know she smells like pussy."

"Tomorrow at nine and keep your nose clean tonight."

"Yes, Dad."

The killer waited until the lights had been out for an hour before approaching the car. Fumbling with the flashlight, he found the brake lines and snipped them. He didn't notice the business card fall out of his pocket as he slid the knife back in and left.

This one was personal and would pave the way for his ultimate dream to come true. Now he just had to keep Molly from knowing about it until it was too late.

Brian was on his way to the police station to meet Melanie and Carl as Michael slid behind the wheel. He'd wanted to stop at the diner and ask his mom how Maya was doing before heading into the city for a comic convention.

He was just taking the curve when he noticed that the brakes were out. The early morning rain made the road slick and he quickly lost control. The sound of metal on metal was deafening and the scream that pierced the air reverberated for a long time.

No one could have predicted the deadly outcome that was about to save Maya's life.
