Fate Wins Out

Part 1

Justin was walking down the street, trying to make some sense of what his life had become. He couldn’t figure out how he had gotten to where he was. He had always known he was gay. From the time he was a pre-teen he knew that he was attracted to boys, not girls, and that thought scared him. He knew there was no way his parents would be alright with his choices, not that being gay was a choice. It was a way of life that seemed to be a part of Justin’s very soul. No, Craig Taylor would not tolerate his only son being a fag. So Justin pushed his feelings deep down inside and played the good son. He got good grades in high school, studied hard and went away to Dartmouth to get his business degree. From there he joined the family business and allowed his parents to find him a suitable wife. What difference did it make? He knew he would never fall in love with a woman so why bother trying? By his twenty fifth birthday, he was a married man, earning a lot of money, and was living every straight man’s dream. The only problem was that it was his nightmare. He was brought out of his thoughts by his cell phone ringing. Looking at the caller ID he was surprised to see it was his wife. He took a deep breath before answering the call, pushing away his guilt. Stacy was a wonderful woman and he felt bad deceiving her. She loved him very much and he couldn’t help but love her, too. Unfortunately it wasn’t the way she deserved to be loved.

“Hey, Honey. Is everything alright?” Justin asked, knowing that she never called him during the day unless something was on her mind.

“Justin. I need to talk to you. I was going to wait until tonight, but I don’t think I can. Is it possible for you to come home early?” Stacy asked, hoping that Justin wouldn’t be able to hear the distress in her voice.

“Actually, I am done work for the day. I decided that since it was my birthday, I deserved to take the rest of the day off. I was just taking a walk while the weather was still warm. Give me an hour and I’ll be home. Is everything okay?” He asked, sensing that something was on her mind.

“Not really, but it will be. I’ll see you when you get home. I love you, Justin.” She assured him, knowing that she was doing the right thing.

“I love you, too. See you in an hour.” Justin replied as he ended the call. He slowly made his way back to his car, trying to figure out what could be wrong with his wife. On the drive home his mind wondered back over to the life he and Stacy shared. They had a good marriage and for that he was thankful. Their sex life wasn’t the passion that most couples share, but they seemed content to be together and things were going good. At least, he thought they were good. After the strange phone call he was beginning to wonder. He felt anxious as he pulled into the driveway of his home and saw Stacy standing at the window waiting for him. He got out of the car and went inside, prepared to hear the worst.

Once Stacy and Justin were settled on the couch together, she took a deep breath and began to explain what was on her mind.

“Justin, I owe you an apology. Hear me out before you say anything please. This is going to be hard enough as it is. Okay?” She asked, knowing she was stalling. How does a person tell the one that they love that they ruined their life?

“Okay, Stacy, but hurry up. You are starting to scare me.” Justin replied, trying to calm his rapidly beating heart. He knew that whatever his wife was going to say wasn’t going to be good and he wasn’t sure he could handle any bad news right now.

“I have loved you ever since my father went to work for Taylor Inc. I thought you were a God of sorts and my teenage heart fell for you immediately. You never even noticed me but that didn’t change the way I felt about you. I was too shy to say anything so I just kept my feelings to myself. As we got older, my father started to hint that maybe there was a way to get us together. I was so thrilled that it didn’t even dawn on me that it wasn’t what you wanted. Once we started dating I pushed away the doubts that I knew you were feeling. I told myself that I would make a good wife for you and refused to see that it wasn’t what you wanted or needed. Our wedding day was the happiest day of my life. I have spent the last few years trying to make you as happy as you’ve made me. I think we’ve had a pretty good life, don’t you?” She asked, hoping he was as happy as he could be with what they have shared.

“Of course we’ve had a good life. Stacy, I’ve been very happy with you. Now why don’t you tell me what this is all about.” Justin was really starting to worry by the way Stacy was talking.

“Justin, I’m pregnant.” Stacy stated, searching Justin’s face for his true feeling. She knew he had mastered the art of hiding his feelings and needed to know what he was thinking.

“You’re pregnant? Honey, that’s great!” Justin exclaimed. He reached for his wife but was stopped by her next words.

“Justin, I know your secret.” She said without explanation.

“What are you talking about? My secret?” Justin asked in confusion.

“Justin. I know that you’re gay. It took me a while to figure it out. I guess I didn’t want to see it. I wanted to believe that we were happily married and that you loved me as much as I loved you. Then it hit me one night. It came to me while I was asleep. Actually, I woke up from a dream and just seemed to know. I could see it all so clearly. I feel so guilty for making you live a lie. I was just going to leave you. Tell you that things weren’t working out and set you free. Then I found out that I’m pregnant and now I don’t know what to do. I’m scared Justin. I don’t want to force you to live a lie anymore, but I don’t know if I can make it on my own.” Stacy placed her head in her hands and started sobbing softly, unable to continue.

Justin was in shock and he wasn’t sure what to do. He didn’t know how Stacy figured out he was gay, but he knew that he couldn’t deny it anymore. This was his opportunity to finally be honest with himself and his wife, but one thing was certain. He had no intention of abandoning Stacy or his baby.

“Stacy. It’s okay. Everything will be okay. I promise.” He assured he as he took her in his arms.

“How do you figure that, Justin? I have never had to take care of myself before, let alone a baby. I don’t know what I’m going to do.” She explained, trying to stop the tears that continued to fall.

“You are not alone, Stacy. You’re right. I am gay, and I should have been honest with you and everyone else years ago instead of living a lie, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t love you and our baby. I don’t know where we are going to go from here, but you are my best friend and I am here for you. I will always be here for you. We are going to stay together and raise our child. No one needs to know about any of this right now. We can just take it one day at a time. Now calm down a little. You’re going to upset our little baby.” Justin placed his hand on Stacy’s stomach, in awe of the fact that their baby was inside.

“Oh, Justin. I love you so much. Thank you for being you. I don’t know what I would do without you.” Stacy replied, suddenly feeling a little better about their future.

“You don’t have to worry about that. I’m not going anywhere.” Justin promised, wondering what their next step should be. In a matter of an hour his whole world changed before his eyes.
