Part 5

Brian and Justin strolled the unknown streets, enjoying their time together. They stopped in front of a toy store, Justin’s face glued to the window. He looked with longing at all the colorful toys, and Brian’s heart broke in his chest.

“One day Justin…one day. I’ll be rich and then I’ll buy you all the toys in the world. I’ll buy you everything you want. I promise.”

Justin looked at Brian and smiled at him, letting him know that he believed him.

They continued walking down the street and soon they found a bench. It was noon and Justin was pretty hungry. Brian took out some of the snacks he brought in his backpack and fed Justin. All of a sudden a police car stopped behind their bench. Brian stayed with his back to the car and signaled Justin to be quiet. He heard the policeman talking...

“Yeah I’ll keep my eyes open, but I’m on Liberty. Kids just don’t walk around Liberty Avenue.”

Brian almost passed out from the shock and thought ‘I can’t believe they’re looking for us already. We have to hide.’ Brian waited until he heard the police car pulling away before getting to his feet. He started walking again, looking for a place to hide.

“Brian, wow! Wook at da priddy colors. Me like.” Brian looked at the place that Justin was referring to. It was called the Liberty Diner.

“You like this place?”

“A-ha.”

“So we’ll eat dinner here, okay?”

“Kay.”

After a while Brian found a park with swings and slides. Justin was so excited he practically jumped from Brian's arms.

“Brian! Let’s pway!”

He held Brian’s hand, running to the swings.

“Up, up,” Justin demand.

“Ok, ok, just a sec.”

Brian set Justin in the swing and pushed it.

“Faster Brian, faster.” Justin shouted through his giggles

Brian obligated and soon he was laughing so hard, Justin’s laugh was contagious. Some time later Justin wanted to go to the slide, so Brian took him out of the swing going with him to the slide. He helped him climb the ladder and then went around to the front of the slide, waiting for him with open arms at the bottom. After 10 times down, Justin got tired and asked to be picked up. Brian carried him to a secluded spot under a tree at the end of the park. He lay back on the grass, head on his backpack, and settled Justin on his chest for a nap. Brian was tired; he hadn’t slept for so long, he just wanted... to close his eyes...just for a second...

“Kid. Hey kid, wake up,” a disembodied voice spoke.

Brian opened his eyes and discovered that it was dark. ‘Oh shit. I can’t believe I fell asleep.’

“Hey kid, you ok?”

“Yeah, sure...”

“What are you doing here all alone? Shouldn’t you be home?”

“Yeah, mom and dad are probably worried. We just fell asleep.”

“You sure you’ll be ok? I can walk you two home.”

“No thank you sir. We live just around the block. We’ll be ok.”

“Go straight home and be careful. You know it’s not the best neighborhood...”

“Ok sir. Thanks again.”

Brian and Justin left the park heading in the direction of the colorful diner, being careful not to draw any attention to themselves. Although you have to admit, two children on Liberty Avenue at night is not a sight you see everyday...
