The Last Two Standing

Reference Page

Summary: Harry and Draco have been bitter rivals since they met when they were eleven. Now seventeen, they are both forced to face some unexpected changes in their lives. Can they overcome their animosity long enough to work together?

Author's Notes: While I love Harry/Draco stories in general, the ones I find the most fascinating are those that explain how two teenagers who hate each other with such passion could ever be friends, let only anything more. Hopefully, I've done that subject justice here.

Cast of characters and terms to remember

Harry Potter (Harry Potter) Until he was eleven, Harry had no idea that wizards even existed. Beginning the night of his eleventh birthday, he was introduced to the wizarding world and to what he could do. For the next six years, Harry attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Told by prophecy that he was the only one who could defeat the Dark Lord, Voldemort (who had killed his parents when he was just a toddler), Harry embarks on a journey with his two friends to find the Horcrux that keeps Voldemort from dying. With all but one Horcrux destroyed (Nagini, the snake), Harry, now seventeen, is ready for the final confrontation with Voldemort.

Draco Malfoy (Harry Potter) A pureblood wizard, Draco is the bane of Harry's existence at Hogwarts. During their sixth year, Draco is given a task to perform by Voldemort or face the extermination of his family. When Draco is unable to complete the task, Professor Snape completes it for him. They escape together and have not been seen since.

Ron Weasley (Harry Potter) Ron meets Harry as they are boarding the train to Hogwarts when they are eleven. They immediately become friends. Sorted into the same house, Gryffindor, they spend the next six years of school as best friends. When Harry announces his intention to find and destroy the Horcrux, Ron is by his side the whole time.

Hermione Granger (Harry Potter) Although she gets off to a rocky start with Ron and Harry, they eventually become fast friends. Hermione is known for her book smarts and without her research abilities, it is doubtful that Harry would have found the Horcrux.

Duncan MacLeod (Highlander) Born 400 years ago in the highlands of Scotland, he is immortal. Mac is renowned for his ability with a sword. While he is an excellent friend to have, he is also a formidable enemy to make. Like Harry, Mac uses his abilities to right the wrongs in the world, earning him the title of 'boy scout' by Methos.

Methos (Highlander) The oldest living immortal at 5000 years old (give or take a few). Methos would rather duck and cover than fight, but is no slouch when he chooses to use the swords he carries. He and Mac have been friends since Mac discovered him hiding among the Watchers as researcher Adam Pierson.

Joe Dawson (Highlander) Mac's Watcher, a mortal who records the happenings in the life of an immortal. When rogue Watchers kill Mac's long time friend, Mac goes after them and becomes friends with Joe. The Watcher's Council frowns upon their friendship, but neither are willing to give it up.

Voldemort (Harry Potter) The most evil wizard of the time. He killed Harry's parents and has been trying to kill Harry since Harry was a toddler. He is responsible for the scar on Harry's forehead.

Lucius Malfoy (Harry Potter) Draco's father. Lucius was Voldemort's leading supporter until he was captured by aurors while trying to steal a prophecy from the Ministry of Magic. As of book 6, he was still in Azkaban (wizard prison), but for the purposes of this story, we'll assume he escaped.

Nearly-Headless Nick (Harry Potter) The Grynffindor ghost whose head remained barely attached after being partially chopped off with a dull axe.

Gryffindors (Harry Potter) One of the four houses at Hogwarts. Gryffindors are known for their courage.

Slytherins (Harry Potter) One of the four houses at Hogwarts. According to the Sorting Hat, 'Those cunning folk use any means to achieve their ends'.

Accio (Harry Potter) Summoning Charm, causes an object to fly to the caster

Apparition / apparate (Harry Potter) Advanced spell used by fully trained witches and wizards to disappear from one place and appear almost instantly somewhere else.

Auror (Harry Potter) wizard police

Avada Kedavra (Harry Potter) spell that causes instant death in a flash of green light, usually leaving no sign of physical damage or of the cause of death that would be detectable to a muggle autopsy.

Immortals (Highlander) Immortals appear normal until they die a violent death. After that, they no longer age and cannot be killed unless you take their head. When an immortal takes another immortal's head, he or she receives the dead immortal's quickening (their knowledge and power). If an immortal is killed and no other immortal is around, their quickening is lost forever.

Incarcerous (Harry Potter) spell that sends thick ropes out of thin air to wrap around someone or something.

Legilimency (Harry Potter) the ability to extract emotions and memories from another person's mind.

Muggle (Harrry Potter) a term referring to non-magical people.

Obliviate (Harry Potter) spell that modifies or erases portions of a person's memory.

Parselmouth (Harry Potter) A speaker of Parseltongue.

Parseltongue (Harry Potter) the language of snakes; to a human who cannot speak it, it sounds like hissing without taking a breath. A speaker of Parseltongue is referred to as a Parselmouth.

Silencio (Harry Potter) spell that silences the target of the spell.

Stupefy (Harry Potter) spell that renders the target unconscious

1 Paraphrased from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, "There are some things you can't share without ending up liking each other and knocking out a twelve foot mountain troll is one of them."
