A Grave Situation

Lindsay turned on the morning news like always while fixing Gus his raisin oatmeal and dropped the pan as soon as she heard Brian’s name. Sinking to the floor clutching her throat she let the tears consume her and wondered what the hell she was going to tell her son.

“Lindz, what’s wrong?” Melanie ran to her partner and pulled her close trying hard to make out the words between the sobs.

“B…B….Brian…..”

“What about the asshole?”

“He’s…..Oh Mel….He’s….”

“What? He’s what honey?”

“Dead.”

“What?”

“He’s dead.”

“Lindsay, now that is just impossible. Brian Kinney is like a bad disease, he will never die.”

“But he did. I just heard it on the news.”

“Maybe there is another Brian Kinney in town.” Melanie stood and turned the sound up on the television so that she could hear exactly what it was that the reporter was saying.

“It appears to be a homicide, Jim,” the young blonde was saying. “Police arrived on the scene to find the victim with his throat slashed and evidence of a forced entry. There are no suspects at this time.”

“Holy Fucking Christ,” was all Melanie could manage when Brian’s face appeared on screen.

Lindsay’s sobbing snapped her out of her hypnotic state and forced her to focus on the here and now.

“Come on baby,” she said pulling her wife to her feet and leading her up the stairs. After getting Lindsay settled into bed she called a sitter and dressed hurriedly.

She sped across town and pulled up just behind the police cars outside of Brian’s loft. Running up to the crime scene tape she tried to push her way past but was held back by a uniformed officer.

“Ma’am I’m sorry but I can’t let you through.”

“I’m Mr. Kinney’s attorney.”

“Be that as it may, ma’am, I still can’t let you through until the next of kin has been notified.”

“Has the body been identified yet?”

“Well, no ma’am, but we’re actually still investigating.”

“Have you found Justin?”

“Justin?”

“So he wasn’t hurt?”

“Ma’am I think that maybe you should speak with the detectives.”

Melanie patiently waited while the officer radioed the detective and was immediately escorted inside. Another officer escorted her up the elevator and to the door of Brian’s loft.

“Ma’am I feel that I should warn you, it’s pretty gruesome in there. Maybe you should wait out here for Detective Killian.”

“I’ll be fine, besides someone needs to ID the body and since Mr. Kinney has no family I’ll do it.”

“Suit yourself, ma’am.”

Melanie walked into a war zone, blood was everywhere and in the corner she spotted a white sheet soaked in blood. Taking another deep breath she stepped over the puddles of blood and made her way to the chief detective and introduced herself.

“Ms. Marcus, do you know anyone that would want to do this to Mr. Kinney?’

“Well there are plenty of people that wished him dead at one time or another but no one would do this.”

“Did anyone live here with Mr. Kinney?”

“Justin Taylor is, was, his partner.”

“Have you heard from Mr. Taylor today?”

“No, I thought he would be here, that maybe he was hurt too.”

“So far we’ve found no evidence that Mr. Taylor wasn’t here last night, but we do know that he wasn’t here when Mr. Kinney was found this morning.”

“And who found him?”

“The cleaning lady, a Rosalie Gonzalez. Apparently she’s been his cleaning lady for years, is that right?”

“Yeah, I’ve heard Brian talk about her. Did she say anything about Justin being here?”

“Not a word about a Justin Taylor. If you hear from him, Ms. Marcus, contact us immediately. We need to talk to him as soon as possible.”

“You don’t seriously think, no that’s not possible. Justin loves Brian. Something must’ve happened to Justin too.”

“At this point in the investigation we can’t rule anyone out.”

Michael woke to the ringing of the phone. Rubbing the sleep from his eyes he leaned over Ben and answered it sleepily.

“Michael, turn on the news.”

“Ma, why the hell are you calling here so early?”

“Turn to channel 8 now Michael Charles Novotny.”

Shaking his head, Michael reached for the remote and flipped to channel 8. He sat in stunned silence as Brian’s picture flashed across the screen. He listened closely as the reporter gave details of his best friend’s demise before collapsing in a fit of tears, waking Ben in the process.

“What the hell?” was all Ben could manage as he sat staring at the television.

“Police have issued a statement asking for the public’s assistance in finding Justin Robert Taylor. Mr. Taylor, who’s picture is on your screen now, is wanted for questioning in connection with the homicide this morning. Authorities are not saying if they consider Mr. Taylor a suspect, but they do wish to speak with him at this time.”

“How is Justin Taylor connected to Brian Kinney, Julia?” the anchorman asked.

“Sources close to Mr. Kinney advised that Justin Taylor was Mr. Kinney’s lover. From what we can tell the 20 year old Taylor has lived with the victim for at least the last year. It’s not known if Mr. Taylor was home at the time of the murder this morning or even if he’s alive. Police are asking for any information at all on the whereabouts of Justin Taylor at this time.”

“They think that Justin killed Brian?”

Michael looked up at his lover and shook his head. “Who else could get that close to Brian?”

“Michael, you don’t seriously think that Justin would do something like this?”

“Yes, I seriously do.”

“You’re not thinking straight right now. When Brian’s death sinks in, you’ll see that there is no way possible that Justin has anything to do with this. He loves Brian.”

“Yeah, then where the fuck is he?”

All over Pittsburgh the news was spreading fast, Brian Kinney was dead and his sunny little twink was missing. All the fags in town were talking about it and more than a few suspected that the missing blond had something to do with his death.

The diner was abuzz with talk of the “King of all Gay PA’s” demise. No one felt safe knowing that if Brian Kinney could be offed there was no safety on Liberty Ave.

Debbie turned up the sound on the black and white set that sat above the counter when the 8 News Team broke in with a new update.

“This just in to 8 News, Justin Taylor has been found. Our own Julia Smythe is on the scene with details. Tell us Julia, what has Mr. Taylor had to say about his lover’s death?”

“Well Jim, it appears that Mr. Taylor hasn’t said a word. Authorities are still in the small hotel room that they were tipped that Taylor was in. No word yet on Taylor’s condition or mental state. Wait, it appears that they are bringing a stretcher out. Yes, Jim it looks like Justin Taylor is dead as well.”

“Well there you have it folks, another unexplained death. Stay tuned to Channel 8 for all the latest on this bizarre case. We now take you back to Gay as Blazes already in progress.”

All of Liberty Ave gathered to mourn Brian and his Sunshine. Debbie spoke and Emmett cried uncontrollably. Michael nearly fainted and Lindsay was inconsolable. Gus, being too young to understand what was really happening, played happily with his GI Joe that his fathers had given him just a few short weeks ago.

The bodies were still at the morgue pending autopsies. Everyone gathered at the diner after the memorial service and the crowd parted ways after several hours.

Meanwhile somewhere in the Italian Alps a beautiful blond was giving his dark haired lover another mind blowing orgasm.

“So Sunshine, how does it feel to be free?”

“Ummmm.”

“I feel the same way.” Brian pressed a soft kiss to Justin’s full lips and smiled at his young lover. “I love you Sunshine.”

“I love you too Brian.”

“You know that was one hell of an elaborate hoax you pulled off.”

“Yeah, well I had a little help from Dr. Evil. How did you find a way to make the bodies look so real?”

“Like I’d ever tell you that. Let’s just say that it helps to have fucked most of the town.”

“Well now you only have me.”

“You’re all I ever needed Sunshine, you’re all I ever needed.”

THE END……..
