The memories replay like an unwanted slideshow but it’s the colors that you remember best.

Gold for the medal that was within your grasp after a first-place short program.

White for the after image of what seemed like a thousand camera flashes.

Blue for the towel you wore to the shower.

Purple for the bruises on the crumpled body.

Red for the blood.

Red again for the ambulance, and for your anger when the damage you suspected was confirmed.

Black hair, stark against a white pillow.

Green eyes that wouldn’t look at you.

Rust, for your triumph tarnished by tears.
