Fruitcake
With her new-found ability to transform fruit into gemstones, Laila's cooking
became even more dangerous. The transformation only occurred when she touched
fruit with her left hand - but she'd get caught up in the excitement of a new
recipe and soon they were picking rubies out of the raisin bread.
While Florian bore this development with as much grace as he could manage, Ray
found it amusing. He'd pile the gems on the side of his plate and continue
eating.
When the holidays arrived, Florian smuggled in a fruitcake from the local baker
and didn't feel at all guilty.
